building a basic web page

7. Files/Folders

File Management is important! - misplace pages and/or images and be prepared for hours of frustration, your own and your web page visitors.

You should have created a folder which will hold all the files and images for a particular page (you may opt to create a separate folder inside this one for images to keep them apart). See 1.Preferences

Note: lower case and the use of an underscore _ to separate the name.
Do not leave blank spaces!

The images folder can sit inside the web_building folder.

Naming Files
1. Files - all pages must have htm or html after their name. eg this page is titled files_and_folders.htm. Again, do not leave any blanks (although Home Page will add the underscore and htm when it prompts you to save).

2. Images - every image must have either .gif or .jpg after the name see 3. Gifs/JPGs.
Again - no spaces between words.

TIP: if you intend to link to another page which is in another folder ensure that both folders are placed in the position from which you will upload them. ie if you link to a page which is in a folder on your desktop and then move that folder to your hard drive, the link will not work!
