North Star Public School
North Star is situated 100 km north of
Moree and the village is centred in a large, productive
agricultural area with the main crops being cereal grains
(wheat, barley and oats), coarse grains (sorghum), oilseeds
(sunflowers) and cotton. Many properties also graze sheep
for wool and fat lamb production and cattle for beef
production, with some stud herds in the area. North Star Public School has two teachers
and 50 students and provides primary education for the
children of the village and local farming community. The
school, is caring and supportive and provides an enjoyable,
stimulating and challenging learning environment. It has a
small, family atmosphere enabling children of all ages to
interact and learn from each other. Children are valued and
encouraged to continually strive for their highest levels of
individual success in academic study and all other
endeavours. All students have daily access to
computers in their classrooms, with a wide range of programs
available for educational and recreational use. Internet
access was greatly improved in November 2001 with the
installation of a new satellite dish, gateway and hub, which
gave faster connection to the Wide Area Network (WAN) of the
Department of Education and Training. The school and its community place great
emphasis on sport. Good sportsmanship is valued. Students are encouraged to participate as
responsible citizens in the school and community. With CAP support the school aims to
provide opportunities for students to learn to play a
musical instrument and recent student performances have
included keyboard, flute, guitar, recorder, percussion,
singing, dancing and dramatic items. The nearest town is
Goondiwindi on the Queensland border and students enjoy
trips to the town to attend visiting live performances and
other cultural activities with students from other
schools.

The village has a post office, general store, hotel, two
churches, a CWA hall, very active sporting club with
facilities to rival many larger towns, and a grain silo
complex which is one of the biggest receival points in
Australia. The railway station is on the line being upgraded
and developed to provide a direct link to Darwin.
There is strong family interest in, and support for, the
school which has excellent resources and facilities for the
students.
A Local Area Network (LAN) was installed also in November
2001, giving the students access to electronic learning
equal to that of other students in NSW schools.
CAP funding is providing in school training for teachers in
the use of technology.
The school's Peter Dobson relay team won gold at the NSW
Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) swimming carnival
in 2001. This was the first time North Star had won a state
gold medal. The team also received the North West Schools'
Sports Association President's Award. A very proud moment
for the school.
The school is always well represented at regional trials in
swimming, cross-country, athletics, cricket and Rugby
League. Five students competed at the NSW PSSA athletics
carnival last year.
Many students travel to Goondiwindi to take part in cricket,
netball, soccer and football competitions at weekends. Local
horse sports and pony club activities are well supported as
well.
On ANZAC Day the school's students march through the village
with the returned service men and women and provide a strong
focus for the North Star Service.
Students are encouraged to be aware of the needs of others
and during the past year they have raised funds for
charities including the Deafness Foundation Trust, Multiple
Sclerosis Society, the Children's Cancer Institute, Stewart
House and the Heart Foundation.
The school continues to support a foster child from
Indonesia through Plan International.

All children are encouraged to participate in art, writing
and other competitions. In 2001 all students designed a
Christmas card for the Variety Club's 'Art With a Heart'
competition. A year 5 student was one of the three
nationwide winners. She won a computer package for herself
and computer software for the school.
