Get That Job

Display
There is a part time job available at the local fruit and vegetable shop. To get the job you need to arrange 660 oranges into a series of square pyramid displays. How would you do this?

Feature Solution

The feature solution for the problem came from Year 5 Boys from Tottenham CS

Gold

What did you have to find out?
We got a job and we had to find out how we could arrange 660 oranges into a series of square pyramid stacks.

What materials did you use?
Oranges, table, calculators, paper.

How did you think? What strategies did you use? How did you solve this problem?
We built a square pyramid using the least amount of oranges. We gradually worked our way up using the squaring principle. The answer we got from our 'squaring' we added to the previous answer.

What answers did you come up with?
When we started we made a table of all the numbers you could use to make a square pyramid.
These were 5, 14, 30, 55, 91,140, 204, 285, 385, 506
We then used our calculators and paper and worked out the different arrangements we could make.
Our display was 506+55+55+30+14=660

(Another display is 14+30+91+140+385=660)
