Orange Pyramids

Oranges
How do you make a square pyramid using oranges?
What is the smallest number of oranges you need to make a square pyramid?
Describe three other ways to make larger square pyramids.

Feature Solution

The feature solution for the problem came from Year 3 from Nyngan PS

Gold

What did you have to find out?
How to make the smallest square based pyramid using spheres and look for a pattern to make others.

What materials did you use?
Tennis balls, pen, paper, whiteboard.

How did you think? What strategies did you use? How did you solve this problem?
Made square based pyramids using tennis balls. Shared our small group ideas with the whole class. Drew diagrams on the whiteboard of our pyramids.

What answers did you come up with?
We discovered a pattern with squared numbers because we always had to make a square on the base.
Our smallest pyramid was 2 squared, 2 x2 or 4 balls in base - 5 balls in pyamid.
The next used the small pyramid with a new base 3 squared, 3 x 3 or 9 balls in base - 14 balls in pyamid.
Our next base was 4 squared, 4 x 4, 16 balls in base - 30 balls in pyamid.
Our next base was 5 squared, 5 x 5, 25 balls in base - 55 balls in pyamid.
Then we ran out of balls but drew diagrams to continue our pattern.
