Batemans Bay CAP
District

Hi
The "Webmaster" has asked the CAP Team to add a little bit about our "educational selves" to the Consultant's page. In listing some of the areas in which I have been trained or have developed skills, I would like it remembered I am merely another learner and do not consider myself to be an "expert". I'm just another teacher working towards improving outcomes for students in geographically isolated schools. I truly believe as learners we are all, that is participants and facilitator(s) involved in the exploration, action and reflection required for educational growth.
My teaching experience and involvement in education is driven by a strong commitment to the principles of social justice. I believe there is a necessity to create organisational structures and curriculum that not only contain the interests of the most advantaged, but more importantly, are designed to embody the needs and interests of the least advantaged. I am very interested in trying to understand and find ways to redress the impact of the layering of disadvantage on learning.. For example the impact of geographic isolation when it overlays on other factors of disadvantage, for example socio economic background, race, disability etc.
I also have a commitment to continue to broadened and deepen my own knowledge and understanding of the needs of geographically isolated students and their communities by keeping abreast of current educational trends. I try to maintain this, through readings and analysis of current data, participation in state and interstate conferences and seminars, and any other avenue which has a focus on rural issues.
Workshops I am trained to run or facilitate include:
