Natural disasters come in many shapes and sizes. In order to be prepared you have to know about different types of disasters. Most are related to the weather but some are geological.

The National Disaster Centre is looking for survival plans and emergency procedures for people to follow if a natural disaster occurs. You are to present a brochure outlining your plan that can be presented to all residences of your area.

 Which Natural Disaster is most likely to affect your town
and how would you plan to survive it?

Natural disasters can arise from:

Weather patterns eg storms, cyclones, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes

Other climatic conditions eg droughts, bush fires, avalanches

Changes in the earth's crust eg volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunami or tidal waves

Step 1:

Visit all the wonderful websites to learn about natural disasters. You will take several days to research, so use your time wisely. Click on the graphic designer to print a copy of the worksheet.

Go to Comparing Disasters websites to research your 4 natural disasters:

  1. Name the disaster.
  2. Define the type of disaster, whether geological or meterological
  3. A brief description.
  4. Where you could find this disaster in Australia and in the World.
  5. Time of the year your disaster could occur.
  6. The effects this disaster has on the environment.

 

Step 2:

Your last step was so successful! You have now discovered the characteristics of 4 natural disasters. Your task is now to determine ONE of these which would most likely affect your local area and be prepared to justify your selection.

Step 3:

Now it is time for you to create your brochure highlighting the emergency evacuation and survival plan for your town. Your brochure must include reasearch undertaken within the following outline:

  1. an explanation of the disaster
  2. a forecast of the impending dangers - For example, lots of rain causes flooding.
  3. precautionary measures to be taken before the disaster hits - for example, placing sandbags around buildings
  4. inclusions in a survival kit
  5. evacuation procedures
