BACKGROUND

Australia is an isolated continent with unique flora and fauna which is of great interest to people from other countries. Australia has built a zoo in South Africa and is in the process of selecting which animals to send to the zoo.

YOUR MISSION

Congratulations! You have been selected to represent the youth of Australia on the selection panel for the animals for this zoo.

The Zoo has been built with four distinct Habitat Enclosures: Rainforest, Desert, Coral Reef and Grasslands.

The selection panel has to choose three Australian animals to live in each enclosure.

Children from schools all over Australia have suggested some animals for each habitat. It is your job to choose the three most suitable animals for each enclosure.The animals need to be suited to live in that environment.

Which animals shall you choose?

Things to consider when selecting your three animals:

• food
• predators
• adaptation
• shelter
• they must be Australian

What do I do with the information?

• Visit the websites listed below for each habitat (don't forget to use your library also).
• Print out 3 copies of the worksheets to record your information.
• Make your decisions on which animals to include in each habitat.

How do I present my information?

You may either....

• Draw a map of your Aussie Zoo showing each distinct habitat and the animals you selected to live in them. Be prepared to justify your choices!
• Create a Kid Pix Slide Show depicting the habitats and the animals selected for each. Again you must be prepared to justify your choices!

Your presentation must include the information gathered on your worksheets.

How will I be assessed?

Your mark for this work will be determined by:

1. correctly placing suitable animals in each enclosure
2. your understanding of the needs of each animal (food, safety, shelter)
3. the quality of your presentation
