Beam Bridges

This is the simplest form of bridge. The earliest beam bridges were probably fallen tree trunks over rivers. The beam may be strengthened by a pair of iron or steel trusses along the sides. In a continuous beam bridge, additional support is given by piers. Beam bridges usually cover a relatively short distance. The beam needs to be able to resist the bending that may occur with heavy loads.
