Pony Club

Horse have been popular and useful animals that have lived and worked with people for thousands of years. Riding can be a relaxing and enjoyable hobby, but riding is only a small part of owning a horse. Knowing how to care for your horse is important.

Joining a Pony Club is a good way to learn about caring for your horse and riding safely and well. People can be members of a Pony Club from 5 years of age to 26 years of age.

At Pony Club you will learn:
* about different types of horses
* how horses behave
* how to feed and water your horse
* how to clean, groom and rug your horse
* how to clean out and care for a stable or stall
* how to saddle your horse before riding
* how to ride safely and well
* the rules of different riding events
* how to compete at a horse sports carnival or gymkhana

As well as Riding Days, each Pony Club also holds camps where children have lots of fun as they learn to live and work together while learning to ride and take care of their horses.
They take part in competitions where  children can win ribbons and trophies for themselves and their club.
They wear their club's uniform that includes riding trousers called jodhpurs, a shirt, tie and jumper or jacket. They also wear their club's badge and use a saddle cloth with the club badge sown onto it.

You need special equipment to make sure you can ride safely. This includes a saddle for you to sit in on the horse's back, a saddle cloth to protect his back, a bridle so you can steer him, a riding helmet to keep your head safe in case you have a fall and riding boots.
A horse need to have metal shoes on the bottom of his hooves to help him grip the ground so he does not slip over.

Other equipment is needed to make sure that you can care for your horse well. You need a head stall and lead rope to walk your horse from one place to another. A horse needs a warm, water-proof rug for cold weather and some people also have a light rug for summer to keep their horses clean and free from biting insects.
To keep your horse's coat in good order you need a curry comb to brush out the knots, brushes for washing and grooming his coat and a hoof pick for cleaning out his hooves.
Horses need clean drinking water and good food to eat including grass, hay and grain.
