SPECIAL PLACES - Stage One

Why are certain sites significant to people from different cultural backgrounds?

There are many special places that people use for different reasons.
They may be used as meeting places or for festivals, ceremonies and celebrations.

Why do some sites become special places?

STEP ONE

List all of the special places, including Aboriginal sites, that your family and others use in your community.
How are they used and who uses them?

(note for teachers:
If you do not have any local Aboriginal sites in your immediate area, refer to the nearest Aboriginal Land Council, local historical society or relevant elders for information regarding sites.
This activity may be done as a class brainstorm and results recorded and displayed for future reference).

STEP TWO
Visit the following special places in Australia to discover how they are used.

Aboriginal Special Places
Non-Aboriginal Special Places

You have been asked to plan an excursion to one Aboriginal and one non-Aboriginal special place.
You will need to consider:

  • the name of the special place
  • where it is
  • what it is used for
  • who uses it
  • why it has become special
  • why you think it would be special to visit

(note for teachers: print out the worksheet for students to complete)
