Some people call Middens rubbish dumps, not because they were dirty places, but rather they were the special places where all remains from food, tool making and fires were left behind. They played a very important part in protecting the environment.

Some other people think of Middens as a type of kitchen, because year after year Aboriginal groups returned to the same place to gather food. Aboriginal people were very clever, because they didn't eat the same type of food every year. They also only took what they needed to eat at the time. This meant they were always preserving food supplies.

Through Middens we are able to trace Aboriginal history by what is found in these special places.
