Many of the special places used for art work can be found in natural environments such as rock surfaces, sandstone, granite boulders, caves and trees.
Engravings are patterns and designs which are carved into flat rocks which are found in the open and on sandstone ridges. Other types of engravings have been carved into tree trunks. These carvings are usually geometric line patterns. Different types of paintings have been found on walls and ceilings of rock shelters.
Art sites are found in places which were visited seasonally and are a record of traditional Aboriginal life, which is where Aboriginal art comes from today.
