Teacher's Notes: This research assignment refers to N.S.W. Board of Studies Modern History Stage 6 Syllabus (approved June 1999), Part III International Studies in Peace and Conflict, Option E: Arab-Israeli Conflict, pages 66,67.

We suggest it addresses Key Features (1) numbers i, iv, v, vi, viii, ix, x. It needs an understanding of all the Concepts (2) and demands familiarity with all the Groups (3). It addresses the Historigraphical Issue (4) of the variety and usefulness of primary sources. Just about all the stated Events (5) will need to be investigated.

 Research Question

Which Israeli Prime Minister made the greatest contribution to the security of Israel and the Middle East area, in the years 1948 to 1998?

1. Identify the issues that affected security, and briefly describe them. [20 marks]

eg. the Five Wars, Jewish settlements in the occupied areas, Palestinian refugees, "Land for Peace", foreign interests, dealing with the P.L.O., differences between Israeli political parties, etc.

2. Research all the Israeli Prime Ministers, paricularly their contribution to security issues. [10 mks]

3. Discuss whether Israel's security might be distinct from security in the whole area of the Middle East. [5 mks]

4. Identify, briefly describe and state the relevance of at least ten (10) significant documents. [10 mks]
