Teacher Information How do I do the task? Useful Links

Scenario:

You have finished your HSC and have achieved an excellent UAI.  This will allow you to attend ANY course at ANY university in Australia.

Mission:

Your mission is to decide which university you will attend and organise accommodation to rent with at least 1 other person.  Both on-campus and off-campus accommodation is available.  Keep in mind that you are a student and have limited resources ($250.00 per week to survive).

Upon completion of this task, you will have a better understanding of the complexities involved in making decisions with a particular focus on going it alone.

Points to Consider:
  • Which university would you select and why?
  • Who are you going to live with?
  • What features do you require in your rental accommodation?
  • Where is your accommodation going to be?   (on/off campus)
  • How did you make your decisions?
  • How will you present your information?

So What Do I Do Now?

STEP 1:

Think about your future and decide on a course that interests you.

Research three universities where your course is available, using the list of Australian Universities.  Print and complete the University Fact sheet.

Make your final decision.

STEP 2:

Find at least one other student who has decided to attend the same university.

After discussion, create an Inspiration mind map which identifies the required features of your accommodation that you have all agreed on.  EXAMPLES

Write a brief report which outlines the complexities in coming to agreement.

STEP 3:

Using the web site of your chosen university, search the available on campus accommodation.  Choose at least two different accommodation options that are available on-campus and record findings on the worksheet.

Discuss and rank options from 1-3 providing reasons for your decisions.

Repeat this process with off-campus accommodation. Universities often have links to sites that provide off-campus accommodation.

Make a final decision on your accommodation with justification as to the reasoning behind your decision.

Step 4: The Presentation

Prepare a presentation all of your findings in your preferred style, for example PowerPoint or word processed hand outs.  This presentation should run for approximately 5 minutes and outline the decisions you have made, focusing on the complexities of the decision making process in each step.

Remember, we are investigating the difficulties associated with going it alone.

A final activity idea may be a PMI on the actual task.
