Higher School Certificate Student Research Assessment Task for the elective
Quantum to Quarks.

 Scenario.

You have been asked to assist your fellow students who have elected to study the topic “Quantum to Quarks”.
To engage in this activity you will need to select one of the ideas or applications listed below.

Possible ideas / applications are:

  • Compare and contrast the contribution made by Heisenberg and Pauli with that of Chadwick and Fermi to the development of Atomic theory. Of the two who made the greater contribution and why.
  • Describe the Manhatten project and what significance did it have for society.
  • Describe the uses of radio isotopes and what significance havethey been in each of the areas they have been applied.

Step 1.  After selecting the application/ideas that most interest you, you are now to build a online research module that addresses the statement provided.

Step 2. To get started convert the statement into a “Focus Question” that requires Higher Order Thinking to answer.  Click on the link below to view an example of how to do this.

Step 3. After designing your focus question create a series of sub-questions (scaffolds) which will help guide your fellow students thinking. These sub questions are evident in the example linked under step 2 and also the next link provided.

Step 4. Locate a suitable bibliography of web sites that will guide your fellow students in exploring the questions you have asked.   

Step 5. Prepare your Online Research Module for presentation paying particular attention to:

The presentation must:

1. Online Research Module                                          (15 marks)

2. Class presentation                                                     (5 marks)

Teacher note: Consideration may be given to breaking down the marks allocated to meet individual schools syllabus outcomes. Rubrics could be created.
